Way In
Superheroes of Faith
They're caped, but you wouldn't call them
crusaders. The 99 is a comic book created by Dr Naif
Al-Mutawa, to give the world DC Comics-style superheroes with
Islamic values. Each of The 99, dispersed throughout the world, has
a different superpower, reflecting the 99 attributes of
Allah.
Noorah (pictured), for example, has the 'ability to see
the light of truth in others', and to make them see it in
themselves. 50 of the 99 are women, five of who wear burqas.
'I needed to find a way to take back Islam from its hostage
takers,' explains Mutawa. 'I would go back to the very sources from
which others took violent and hateful messages and offer messages
of tolerance and peace in their place. I would give my heroes a
Trojan horse in the form of The 99. Islam was my Helen. I wanted
her back.'
Begun in 2007, The 99 has now been embraced by
DC Comics themselves, who are publishing a series of crossover
comics, in which the 99 join forces with the Justice League of
America, which includes Superman, Batman and Wonderwoman. Whether
Wonderwoman will be asked to cover up has not been announced.
